Erika creates under the name Knot Straight, a play on many facets of her life, including sewing, queerness & a genetic disorder. Erika has hEDS (hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) an autonomic nervous system and connective tissue disorder that causes joint instability, muscle weakness & chronic pain. Sewing can be challenging, but it’s also therapeutic, somatic & healing.
Erika uses sewing as a form of joyful activism. Her whimsical fabric art expresses her distain for patriarchy, capitalism & American politics and love for bold women, nature & her queer community.
Erika has always cared about Mother Earth. In grade school she entered a contest to create the most intriguing Recycle poster and she won! In high school her recycling project was awarded at the science fair. Today Erika upcycles & repurposes fabrics to create art. Her hope is that her Art will last long after she does, continuing to envoke conversation, progress and positive change.
